Before we get started, you’ll need to download and install GnuCash. You can do so from the official website (https://www.gnucash.org/). Once it’s installed, launch the program and you should see the following window:

The first thing you need to do is create a new file for your account information. To do this, click on the “File” menu at the top of the window and select “New File”. A dialog box will appear asking you for some basic information about your file, such as its name and location.

Fill out this information and click “OK”. Once your file is created, you’ll be taken to the Accounts window. This is where you’ll enter all of your account information, such as bank accounts, credit cards, investments, etc.

For now, let’s just focus on creating a simple checking account. To do this, click on the “Accounts” menu at the top of the window and select “New Account”. A dialog box will appear asking for some basic information about your account.

Enter a name for your account (e.g., Checking) and select “Checking Account” from the Account Type drop-down menu. Then click “OK”. You should now see your new account in the Accounts window:

Now that we have our checking account set up, let’s add some transactions to it. To do this, switch to the Register window by clicking on the “View” menu at the top of the Accounts window and selecting “Register”. You should see something like this: To add a transaction, simply fill out each field with relevant information (e.. Date*, Description*, Payment method*, From Account* [select our checking account], To Account [leave blank], Amount* [enter amount]). When you’re finished filling out each field press Tab key go next field*. If all fields are filled in correctly then cell background color turns green*. Finally press Enter or Return key* record transaction in register*. That’s it! Adding transactions is really that simple in GnuCash.

How Do I Enter Income in Gnucash?

Assuming you would like a step-by-step guide on how to enter income into GnuCash: 1. Open GnuCash and go to the Accounts tab. 2. Find the account you want to add the income to under the Assets or Liabilities section (depending on whether it is personal or business income).

3. Select that account, then click on the Transactions tab. 4. Click on the New Transaction button. 5. In the Account field, select the account you want to add money to again from the drop-down menu (this should already be populated if you selected it in Step 2).

6. Enter today’s date in the Date field or use the calendar icon to select it. 7. In Description, enter a brief description of this income transaction – for example, “Paycheck” or “Client Payment”. 8. Leave Split Transaction checked and click Continue when prompted about splits (we will come back to this).

9a. If this is personal income, skip ahead to Step 11b below! Otherwise, in Action, select Increase from the drop-down menu since we are adding money/income into this account (as opposed to spending it).

Then enter an amount under Value and press Tab – GnuCash will automatically populate Quantity at 100% unless you change it here manually before moving on (e10 means 10%, e50 means 50%, etc.). You can also leave Value blank and fill in Quantity instead if desired – again, pressing Tab after filling one of these out will populate the other automatically at 100%. When finished press OK at bottom right corner of window.

. If there are multiple people/entities involved in this income stream (for example, if you run a business with partners), then each person’s share should be its own split under Memo with their percentage next to Value as described above..

For now however let’s assume there is just one source of income so we’ll only need one split.. 10b) If this is business income however,. After selecting Increase for Action as described above,. Under Category:, select Expenses:Business:Income from drop-down menu OR create a new category by clicking on Add Category button at bottom left corner of window.. This will ensure that your business expenses are properly tracked for tax purposes later!.
