18 minutes before sunset

The traditional time to light candles on Shabbat is 18 minutes before sunset, but in some communities, candle lighting can begin as late as thirty minutes before sunset. However, this is not the norm. In fact, many communities choose to light candles ten or twenty minutes before sunset, while Jerusalem lights candles forty minutes before sunset. As a result, the time is not universally recognized as the correct time to light candles.

Nevertheless, while there is no specific law on the time to light candles on Shabbat, there are some customs about when and where to light them. According to the Sefer Yere’im, Shabbat begins when it is time to walk at least 3/4 mile before sunset. While there is controversy about how long this should be, some authorities agree that it is 18 minutes before sunset.

Traditionally, Shabbat candles must be lit before sunset, as lighting candles after sunset would be considered desecration of Shabbat. Although it is traditional to light Shabbat candles with white candles, people may also light them with other colors. Chanukah candles are lit before Shabbat candles

The custom of lighting candles on Rosh Hashanah, or New Year’s Day, differs slightly from the tradition for Shabbat. During Shabbat, candles are lit about 18 minutes before sunset. However, you can light them earlier in the evening. The first rule to follow is to light them before sunset.

When lighting Shabbat candles, you should never let them go out. If you do, you will invalidate the blessing. Make sure the candles are in a safe place, away from flammable objects. Also, don’t move them once they’re lit.

Before lighting Shabbat candles, make sure the candles have been prepared. The purpose of lighting them ahead of time is to make the candles ready for Shabbat and Yom Tov. When lighting a candle, it’s best to light it before sunset, as that will ensure that the candle is ready for Shabbat.
